BARGE PROJECTS

KINDER MORGAN SEA WORTHY I & II

Detyens Shipyards were awarded a conversion package for two barges owned by Kinder Morgan Energy Partners, L.P.. The existing barges SEAWORTHY I & II are currently being used as deck barges. KMP’s plans are to convert the existing deck barges into crane barges. The new crane barges will be used at KMP’s Shipyard River Terminal in Charleston, SC. The dry bulk terminal in Charleston handles materials such as coal and cement.

Earl Rayburn with KMP said, “the converted crane barges offer significant expansion opportunities for the KMP Charleston dry bulk terminal.”

The existing barges will receive over 450 tons of new structural steal. DSI will be installing new transverse and longitudinal bulkheads, crane deck foundation, crane rails, twenty three 18’ flush hatches, twenty three ladders, three raised hatches, and 270 zinc anodes. Specifications also call for cleaning, painting and coating the existing surfaces and tanks. DSI will also install and test two new Gottwald 40 ton cranes. This project is representative of the continued growth of Detyens in the area of steel production and management.
